23.03.2016 : The Johan Sverdrup Project

As we all know, these are trying times for the oil and gas industry. The decline in the oil price has badly affected the industry, which in turn, has led to less investment, job cuts and oil fields operating at a loss. In recent weeks/months, the oil price seems to be slowly recovering, which is a good sign for many in the industry. Another positive sign is that there are numerous ongoing projects which many companies are benefiting from. One such project is the Johan Sverdrup project.

The Johan Sverdrup project is an oil field located in the North Sea with an estimated value of upward of $12,000 ($M). This represents huge value to the industry. It is one of the largest oil discoveries made on the Norwegian continental shelf. The Johan Sverdrup project is operated by a number of different companies, with the main equity holder being Statoil. We look forward to us Engineering GREAT together.

With the amount of equipment, construction and processes involved in the Johan Sverdrup project, fantastic opportunity for special fastener manufacturers, and in particular special fastener manufacturers that are approved to NORSOK is generated. IMI SSF are one of the few who are approved to NORSOK for manufacturing and forging fasteners. NORSOK accreditation is crucial for many involved in the Johan Sverdrup project. It represents an important quality that few can achieve.

As the Johan Sverdrup project starts to gain traction, more suppliers are looking towards IMI SSF for help with their fastener requirements. Suppliers on the project seek high quality, fully traceable, fully certified products. Lead time and delivery is another important factor that suppliers consider. With IMI SSF operating with a delivery performance of over 98%, they can be rest assured that they are in experienced, capable hands.

If more information is required on the Johan Sverdrup project or NORSOK, the contact details are listed below. IMI SSF welcome all visitors, and we appreciate hearing from suppliers and potential suppliers.

It was a great day, SSF took the opportunity to showcase its newly opened premises to all the staff by holding the morning activities in rooms throughout the building. It was a great opportunity for the staff to get together and discuss the future of IMI and how SSF can help it move forward. Our new Chief Executive, Mark Selway, sees the IMI way day as an opportunity to shape the future of IMI, involving all 1200 worldwide employees gives each individual a voice and helps to show that everyone’s opinion is valid. The main theme this year was engineering great and collaboration within the group, SSF has performed strongly in both areas by improving its manufacturing capacity and working closely with other IMI subsidiaries. The day concluded with a team building walk around Linacre Reservoir, led by junior staff members who did a great job of taking leadership and organising their teams. We would like to thank everybody for getting involved and we look forward to what our ideas will bring to SSF in the near future.

After a 60% jump in turnover in 2012, SSF has had to adapt quickly to increased demands and tighter production schedules. The dedication and commitment of our staff saw that we got through the year with the continuous commitment to quality and integrity that we are renowned for. The high demand for quality driven products within the industries that SSF operate led to another great year in 2013. With the future of SSF looking strong, it was decided that we needed additional capacity in order to meet the increasing demand of our customers. With fantastic support from our parent company - IMI plc - early 2014 saw SSF being handed the keys to our brand new premises – Building 5A. Now, six months later, an inspection office, cafeteria and conference room have filled the empty floor space, and the factory floor is now home to our brand new, lean manufacturing facility. We are proud to announce that this facility is now open and fully operational as a CNC dedicated machine shop. Not only will the new facility increase SSF’s capacity, but will also serve as a showcase to the benefits of lean manufacturing for other IMI group companies. The factory layout has been painstakingly crafted using three dimensional floor plans and cardboard engineering to minimalize waste and create a practical, clean and safe working environment.
